A Message from Dr. Irena Skibinsky to Phobic Dental Patients

“One of the areas of dentistry that is very important to me is treating people who have ‘dental phobia’. Patients who are scared to get dental care because of their dental anxiety tend to neglect their teeth. When this occurs, simple decay can progress to rampant decay. A person’s teeth and their smile can become very unsightly when their smile shows rotted teeth. This is not only embarrassing, but at times can be very painful. It can also interfere with the ability to chew food properly and even to speak clearly.

By being a good listener, I believe I have the skills, patience, and compassion necessary to treat patients who have this extreme fear of the dentist. When necessary, I use nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as ‘laughing gas’ to further reduce the perception of dental treatment pain and to help dental phobic patients overcome their fear of going to the dentist.”
